Mission Orientation
In order to fly missions as Command Pilot, Angel Flight West requires that everyone complete a one-time mission orientation with one of our member mission orientation pilots. Mission orientation pilots, or MOPs, are CFI's who volunteer to give you an orientation on the Angel Flight process.
To find an orientation pilot in your area, contact Erin Olson at the office, or you can search for MOPs in your area online. (Note: You must be logged into AFIDS to search. You will need your Member ID, or your AFIDS username and password to log in to AFIDS.)
Orientation Policies (Revised January, 2003)
Angel Flight West has recently made some significant changes in its policies regarding pilot qualification and orientation. When a member flies a passenger, he or she is the Angel Flight West Command Pilot for that flight. That means that he or she is responsible for the flight, and for adhering to Angel Flight West's policies and procedures. We distinguish this responsibility from the responsibility of the pilot-in-command, the policies and procedures for which are set by the FAA. Note that the Angel Flight West Command Pilot may or may not be the pilot-in-command for the flight, as defined by the FAA.
To become an Angel Flight West Command Pilot, members must meet certain qualifications. In addition, members must participate in an orientation session with a mission orientation pilot. The orientation does not involve a flight, only a ground review. Finally, once granted the designation of Angel Flight West Command Pilot, it is that pilot's responsibility to ensure that he or she meets all of Angel Flight West's minimum ongoing qualifications before accepting or flying a flight. All members will be required to sign an affirmation to this effect as a condition for annual membership renewal.
If you do not meet the minimum requirements for becoming a Command Pilot, or if you currently a Command Pilot (formerly known as a PIC) and do not meet the ongoing requirements, we encourage you to join or renew your membership and continue to participate in Angel Flight. As soon as you meet the requirements, you can begin flying as Command Pilot, and in the meantime, there are many valuable and fulfilling ways to contribute to our mission.
This page is a reference for new and current members on the new policies and procedures. If this does not answer your questions, please contact the office at (310) 390-2958, or send email to
